Default Coolant level warning

I have a volvo v40 '65' plate. Almost 4 years old now. Done 51k mileage. Mot passed in Sept.

My issue is this, the coolant level warning light has been on saying it's low. This started about 2 months ago so when we check it it's well below minimum but we open the cap,the pressure comes out then the coolant level comes up over the max lines. The first time it was a bit low and was topped up immediately. Then this continued and we wondered if it was a sensor issue as we knew it wasnt low because we were checking it continuously.

So then it started to say engine temp too high last week and the emergency engine fan was blowing once the engine was off. So we took it to the garage who said the sensor had fallen into the fluid and there could be a crack in the engine or a leak. So they changed the gasket, drained the coolant and put more in then 'double sealed' it.

So the garage said going a 4 hour journey would be fine and would give the car 'a good run but keep the heating on hot all the way to run it to temperature'. After 30 mins the lights for coolant level and engine temp came back on but on and off for various lengths of time during the journey (emergency trip to visit family after a berevement/for the funeral). During most of the journey it was the coolant light not the engine temp light.

So phoned the garage the day after driving up the road as it was too late to do the same day. The heating was going on and off too. And they said it might be an air bubble so just open it and top it up. Then keep doing that. So we phoned this morning after driving the 4 hour trip back and they said they thought it was an airlock and they then attempted to sort it but now the garage say 'its ****ed' and theres probably a crack in the engine that we cant seen because 'Volvo's have such soft engines' that when there isn't enough coolant fluid getting through this can happen, they said they've seen it before. The garage is just a local one but looking for a second opinion.

Any ideas?
