Hi All - I have an update for you.

The (new) garage has had the car for 4 days this week. They swapped wheels and other components from a known faultless v90 to help isolate the problem. Each time road testing the car after each component swap. 1/4 tank of diesel has been used! Finally they found a fault with the prop shaft on my car. (as flagged by piotrek some weeks ago as a known issue) The garage has ordered a new prop shaft (2 week delivery). In the meantime they have re-fitted the original prop so the car is drivable. The garage has also attempted to 'fix' the problematic universal joint with a hammer and say it is better than it was. I'll be testing this out on a long run next week.
