Nicholas:~ I haven’t replaced these hinges (yet) bit if I have to then I would probably try and use the original gasket or make one up – I have fitted roof rails to my 240 by using homemade gaskets (eBay rubber gasket sheet)
They shouldn’t leak! So back to the drawing board.
I would use the Windscreen seal product mentioned in the previous post rather than Dum Dum for this application- if the hinge can just be loosened enough then you should be able to extrude a descent quantity between the roof & gasket and gasket& hinge (dry surfaces) bolt the hinge down but not fully- allow sealer to start to go off then fully tighten.
Initially it will be a bit messy but you can wipe the excess off with white spirit or panel wipe as you neaten the edges up- once it goes off you can go over it again- this product remains flexible under the formed surface skin.
