I have to be similarly careful with my current Gandalf beard. Fortunately having done "shop" class in school uniform means it's second nature to tuck it in my collar. Metalwork teacher took great pleasure in showing up pictures of de-gloved fingers and torn scalps.

PSA: it's also handy to tuck your beard away when fettling derailleurs, if only because it's a pain getting beard hair out of jockey wheels.
