I live in rural france, and didnt even know about dpfs till we went on a trip to the uk to buy a nearly new volvo xc60 SE lux nav d5 220 bhp in january. Funny enough it was not on the volvo, it was on my wifes french lhd peugeot 308 we were using for the trip.
We got stuck in a really really long accident traffic jam on thE M6. This involved a lot of long periods on tickover.
Finally after two hours the jam was cleared. As we made our way and accelerated thw dpf warning light came on. It went off when the filter had regenerated, however it reappeared when the car was following my new xc60 on french motorways usually when my wife was accellerating to keep up.
It did not reappear until we sold the car and it came on briefly with the new owner.
Talking to my mechanic, who is not a vovlo but a bmw specialist, the on board computor fault code would need reseting, and possibly the dpf filter would need to be jetwashed out to clean it.
Otherwise the problem can reoccur. I realsie it is a problem to regen the dpf in a city as you need a trip on the m25 once a tank to do it. Even then it depends on the time of day. I would suggest that if it went straight to limp mode without the usual warning light stage telling you to regen the dof, then that is not normal. Dpf technology is not new or rocket science and usually the same conditions apply between car makes. There is normally an escalation from warning light to limp mode only if you ignore the warning light stage. For your car if it has gone straight from Normal driving to limp mode avoiding any stage warning lights then there is something wrong maybe with the sensors associated with the dpf.
Unfortunatly some dealers dont listen when you tell them the symptoms. Forget the bits of paper. If the car is not doing what it is designed to do and in the order its supposed to do it in, then thats the problem not your driving. The dealer should be looking for reasons why and not sending you bits of paper. You only have to drive for ten minutes at a speed over fourty to regen. The problem now is you may want to get the fault code reset and possibly the dpf inspected and cleaned and then see if it reoccurs. Good luck.
