All using standard Volvo parts - fan, relay and wiring. I used one of these in the bottom hose to switch it...

Increased by MPG by 1-2 when I did it, too - now averaging 44.3MPG over the last 20k miles (all long journeys, mostly with cruise control on at motorway speeds).

It's a very tight fit - requires the viscous fan pulley idler to have the nose trimmed down, and if I remember rightly I skimmed the fan motor to provide more clearance too. There's less than 10mm from the front of my engine to my fan when the engine is static, but it doesn't touch when driving.
