I have 2008 d5 xc70. We went a way for the bank holiday whith the caravan. When we are ready to go I let the car tick over for a w While to let the Engine Warm up before we go. While the car was warming up on Monday I heard the engine note change as the the thermostat opened up. Have you tried leaving the car runing from cold to see if you can hear the thermostat open up ?
