Default How the dealers cure axle ping -

they glue the driveshaft!

Am in the process of replacing the lower ball jount and suspension mount on my MY08 S60, but found it odd that the hub didn't slide easily on the splined shaft and, in the end I had to drive it out with a long socket in the hub and a club hammer; I didn't want to risk pulling it and dislodging the inner joint. Once removed I found it a bit odd to find some crud and rust on the splines, but I put the latter down to the dust shield behind the hub having broken up. Upon cleaning it up, however, I found traces of sealant on the splines!

I can only assume that this was put there when I took the car to a main dealer just before it was 3 years old and still in warranty because of axle ping going from forward to reverse. The dealer looked at it, said no problem sir we can fix that while you wait and then wanted to charge me for the privilege! After a 'bit of discussion' they accepted that it was a fault, the car was still in warranty and finally gave me my keys back, along with a lock sealed driveshaft it would seem.
