I have tested the front and rear drain holes with a water hose indeed, clear and nicely working

But you are correct about the amount of water - the foam under the carpet started to stink which is what caught my attention in the first place. The water was accumulating there for many weeks for sure, plus we had some heavy rains this season. I also had a rubber winter mat there which hid all the water underneath while staying perfectly dry on top of the carpets. Trouble with this is we almost never are aware there is water accumulating under that carpet for some reason. I bet if all Volvo owners lifted the front carpets, at least one third of them will find the area soaked.
