Thanks Derek. I've done the plunger/valve a few times, makes no odds. When I took the brake pads out of the old caliper today they were worn on an angle, suggesting that some of the 4 brake cylinders were not working as hard as others, which I suspect means that one circuit is not working as hard as another. There were no other mechanical issues with the caliper (ie pad sticking against caliper etc) which would have caused it.
