I didn't pay too much attention to the linkage and gearstick mechanism when I did my clutch but I'm pretty sure it's a metal plate that bolts in and houses the mechanism. So most of your problem will most likely be how the engine idles (or if a mount has gone and is allowing too much movement, makes the car shake like a V8 muscle car).

I know my linkage needs a rebuild as it's pretty worn (mostly short journeys in its life with lots of stop start driving and changes in speed limits). It's taken to clunking into gear more than normal recently, just trying to decide what material to make the new bushes on the linkage out of (I'm thinking Delrin would probably be best but I also have some PEEK laying around but I'm concerned it may be a bit too hard).
