Default Battery

096 is the correct battery (size/terminal layout and clamp style) and any reasonable make will do.

Have successfully fitted a larger battery, but it involved moving a cable locating clamp at one end of the battery tray and needing a different battery clamping method, and is a real struggle to fit or remove the larger battery to the point another pair of hands can be useful. Only did this as I had a larger battery available as a spare.

Had an ECP Lion brand 096 in the Golf (2.3l V5 engine) which lasted five years and was replaced when it went flat. Turned out that the alternator was faulty so the Lion is used as a good emergency spare.

Bought a Bosch S5 for a BMW X5 and had several electrical problems. Eventually decided the battery was the problem and returned to Halfords ready for an argument. They attached a Bosch tester and immediately, without a murmer, agreed to replace the battery (and admitted they had receive a faulty batch).

The important point is to buy a reputable make from somewhere (preferably local) who can give good customer service should something go wrong.
