It was actually nothing to do with the fuel system, it was the clocks. The solder on the main board had become brittle and failed. This meant there was no electrical circuit being made so the gauge didn't work. It's been resoldered and put back together!

Not an easy fix, took a lot of effort to find the problem but definitely worth it! Fuel gauge is pretty important! ha ha
