Question stigansven

Just recently my engine heater clock stopped working (ether filled ) due to the outer casing being broken so I bought a mechanical one. that fits the same hole in the dash. This one is electrical so it states it has to be wired to the ignition switch / one wire to ground/ one to the cylinder head. Does it have to be wired to the ignition ,could it be wired to the fuse block , or to the coil (at the ignition end for there is no armoured cable on my car ) The coil was renewed about 10 years ago minus outer cable.
