I did think of checking the carb securing nut/ bolts, but it looked difficult to get to them. I might be wrong though. I think this was a replacement carb fitted by the previous owner, a Mercedes trained mechanic, and he always did things up tight!
I tried a sort of leak test spraying WD40 around the joint between cab and manifold, did not find any leak.
I've lower the level of petrol in the tank now, so could soon try the methylated spirit. Saturday I'll probably get the non return valve from the 340 GLE.
