It may be easier to reverse and get a run at it and get through before you start losing traction. It is always best if in doubt of the way ahead,to stop and walk forward and check out what you are intending to drive through,it may turn out to be a mud hole!......... full of hippos?

P.S Don't do what I once did....... Ah there are signs of a tracked vehicle over there, I will go that way. WRONG! I didn't think of the contact area of tyres compared with tracks and sank.

Does of course depend on the texture and consistency of the mud. I have managed to get 4WD tractors bogged in up their axles. No amount of digging or stones or branches would get these out and that is despite all the extra nice things like low ratios, locking differentials etc

That is of course where a decent winch comes into its own
