Start Stop won't work if the battery is below a certain state of charge or if the voltage is low because of heavy draw or battery condition. Have a read of the vehicle handbook - there are quite a lot of situations in which it either won't cut in or will re-start the engine when you wouldn't expect it to.
If you didn't get a handbook with the car, you can download it from Volvo's website or get it on an app for your phone from the google appstore (or Apple alternative I assume).
You don't have to worry about the auxiliary battery unless it's goosed. Charging the vehicle battery either through the alternator or via an external charger will also charge the auxiliary battery.
If you do use an external charger, connect the earth cable to a suitable earth point on the car, not to the battery negative terminal. There is a monitoring device (shunt) on the battery terminal which the battery monitoring system uses to determine the battery condition and bypassing it by connecting a charger directly to the terminal is another situation in which start/stop will be disabled as the BMS sensor then sees a battery that is out of step with the last known sensor reading and disables the system.
Not sure what you mean about the mirror coming unstuck. They are fixed to the windscreen by a clip on the end of the mirror stalk which fastens over a nut secured to the glass. You can unclip the mirror by turning it about 45 degrees clockwise after removing the plastic housing that surrounds it.
The cars usually have the wiring connector for the autodimming mirror in the loom, normally tucked up inside the headlining behind the front interior light console, so you need to do a fair bit of dismantling to locate it and route it towards the mirror. On my 2017 car however, the connector for the autodimming mirror was just clipped into a recess in the side of the manual mirror mounting stalk instead of being hidden away, as shown in section 6 of the homelink mirror fitting instructions attached.
