Default Alternator

Hi,

Car has been sat for a few months thought i better take it out for a run.
Started up fine to run a small tyre pump, got that all sorted, killed the engine, went back a few minutes later wouldn't start.
Next day i jumped it and went for a drive, every light on the dashboard was on i thought well lets see if it just needs a good shake for them to go out. Went a few miles obviously losing power then died. Jumped again started up fine but died before i could get the bonnet shut.
Got it recovered home, jumped it again to measure the battery i got ~8v directly at the terminals idle and rev and measuring both on the battery terminals and the leads themselves, i'm presuming something with the alternator rather than the battery.

Strange thing is i can't get continuity between the battery- and the alternator body but I'm showing a great connection between battery and power steering bump body, is this even possible? i must be doing something stupid?

As for testing the regulator I would really like to avoid pulling out the power steering pump etc if not absolutely necessary. Is it possible to remove the regulator or test it in place?

thanks in advance for any inputs.
