0w is better oil than 5w quality wise, and gives faster flow and lubrication during startup, plus improvement in economy and emissions during warmup. Yes 5w is ok for uk, but 0w does hold advantages. Its not about cold pumpability at -35 vs -30 etc but other things.
So yeah, 5w30 is ok, but 0w30 is better not a gimmick.
volvo 0w/20 is about £13 a litre bought in much cheaper of course . so ask for discount ..

People here do not realise what goes on in modern lubrication systems , things have moved on greatly since the 940 and pre 2000 cars .
Engines now have piston cooling jets , 2 x Variable valve timing pulleys and variable volume oil pumps and oil pressure , they have superchargers and turbochargers which require certain oil characteristics all controlled by the ECU.

All this is designed to work properly with 0W/20 oil not 5W/30 or anything else , the system knows oil temperature and ambient temperature and coolant temperature, rpm , throttle load etc and adapts these crucial milli-second timings of the above devices to suit the viscosity of the oil .... OIL is the only thing not known by the ECU in all these very fine calculations so you are going to throw it all out the window by tampering thinking you know best..
As said above Volvo know what they are doing more than anyone else here and work with Castrol engineers on developing new engines . you benefit by using the Oil they choose ...
