Thanks for that. In fact, the local kindly garage owner, who was formerly a Volvo area service manager, pulled the flexible pipe off the pump and demonstrated that there was no suction from the pump.
I ordered a new pump and, a week later, he fitted it for me for 15€ while I waited. I am sure I could have fitted it myself but, in the time he took to do it, I would still be hunting for the right spanner.
