Yep, it's because it's a big five cylinder engine mounted across the car with the
gearbox on the end so there is no room for the wheels to go without making the car even wider, nothing to do with CV joint or anything else.
BMs and old Volvos, that people are comparing with, have the engine along the axis of the car so there are no room issues.
