I only have mine on when it's hot. I find the D5 doesn't accelerate nearly as well when the A/C is switched on.
Having said that, my old BMW air con was working up until a few years ago. Had it re-gassed now it works for a week before giving up again. I think perhaps that was a lack of use and now a seal has failed somewhere.
