After a run to Clive Brook Volvo in Huddersfield a couple of weekends ago - for their Heritage Club Saturday Meet and well worthwhile - I had the car up on the ramps for an inspection by their mechanic. The gear linkage is tight, with no noticeable wear; the only transmission-related issue is that the propshaft centre bearing is delaminating/failing so it's down for replacement.
There's nothing fouling the clutch pedal (as Laird Scooby suggested checking) and I set up the seat so I can depress the clutch pedal fully.
I'm going to visit my local main dealer and order the gearbox oil on Saturday.
