On the 1999 V70 with the AW50-42 the bell housing used on the diesel is different to the petrol engined one.
Both bell housings have the same 'gearbox proper' mounting bolt layout.
I believe there can be different final drive ratios too.
Early AW50-42 gearboxes have some different types of sensors though case threads and drillings are the same.
With determination and research these problems can usually be overcome - the replacement gearbox I fitted in my V70 diesel came from a C70 petrol.
I did a thread on here 2 - 3 years ago but only actually changed the gearbox after initially trying to repair the original box - so the swapout is later in the thread.
