My in-tank pump failed intermittently and gradually got worse. It would log a low fuel pressure code (can't remember what off hand, but it'll be on the forum somewhere), however the code wasn't stored after ignition off, it had to be read whilst in 'limp mode' with the fault active.
I put a brand new pump in (about £300 a few years ago) and the car was transformed, however you need to be absolutely certain it is the fault before chucking this much money at it.
It's in the realms of a DIY job, although a little smelly it's not hard once you get the tank caps opened. Run the fuel tank as low as possible though to make the job easier if DIY'ing.
