I think youve mixed up european 'all season' which are very good in snow and ice, with American 'all season' which are summer tyres. In central europe, the line between all season and winter tyres is very blurred. Tyres such as Nokian weatherproof, Goodyear vecotor 4 season G2 give full winters a seriously hard time, infact the nokian in particular is better than some full winter tyres. On the other hand the Conti ts860 winter is a better year-round tyre than some all-season tyres.....
The one that really changed the game was/is the Crossclimate, as it offers 90% or thereabouts the performance of a winter tyre, with 98% the performance of a summer tyre, rather than the conventional bias of around 95% winter/85% summer tyre performance of a traditional all season.
