I would suggest there is something amiss if there is a gap.
54 plate XC90 with 55k. Tough call. Its possibly a later box. What colour is the gearbox oil? I think the box in our 05 plat at 91k miles was still good, but the driveshaft failing killed the gearbox. If your oils a good colour I wouldn't worry. Different colour castings mean nothing.
Bestgear's how to's are top, so you shoudl have no problem.
