This problem appears to be due to a faulty Boost Pressure Sensor, giving a 'Signal too high' error in the Motronic ME 9.0 engine ECU.
At idle speed the BPS was registering a 'boost' pressure of 1,060.0 mbar against an actual ambient pressure of 991.0 mbar (verified against weather report).
Under full boost the pressure would appear too high and the boost would be dumped via the wastegate (I presume).
Going to replace the BPS and clear the fault stored next week....
