There is also a small possibility that the receiving antenna above the Speedo has stopped working. Quite rare to happen, but seen it in two occasions. It's plug and play and does not require any programming.

If it's not that and you can't get the key fob repaired, you could get a complete lockset, and replace the lot. The lockset comprises of the ECU, inmobiliser module, lock alarm module recover for the fobs, keys, steering column lock barrel, drivers door lock, boot lock and glovebox lock. Did this on my 1.9D S40 and got 2 keys this way for much less
