I seem to remember they started out with the Renaults and graduated to the BDA, but memory plays tricks.

The K series motor hasn't ever been reckoned to be a really great engine by most bikers, and BMW afficianados still swear by the venerable old flat twin. To be honest, there are advantages to using the flat twin as the c of g is way lower, and they still produce lots of power, and can easily be tuned. If shaft drive wasn't a priority and you wanted to be (relatively) patriotic, I'd say use a Daytona 1000.
