I've only ever had about 50 quid in the car (2/3rds tank?) so im guessing its a problem in the top half of tank

usually the problem is the car has been filled with petrol and the tank sender has been removed on the n/s to drain of and the seal has not been replaced and there has been grit when refitting the sender to the tank.
have you had the car long and has it been filled since you have had it ?
