I would be really careful with such line. I know you trust mechanics, but I don't and for a good reason. It is really easy for them to lie and buy the car for peanuts when in fact it can be easily fixed.
How come the garage first said the car runs and now it doesn't ?
At the very least, do not sell it to that garage, bring it home and sell it yourself.
As for the water pump, most certainly it was an aftermarket part.
