It is weird that there wasn't any before that on the old one (previous mechanic also didn't put it on) and I haven't had any problems and even the new filter came without it.

Actually I'll go in the store today to somehow get the smaller one and fit it on.
Is it safe to take the new one out and leave the large gasket on? Or should I also replace this one also after taking the filter cap off?

Well, I think this is the most logical explanation as you proposed, so I'll double check again (in the box and on the old filter) and try to somehow put it on.
Will come back with the results and thank you for now.
