There is a temperature sensor in the box and the software records how long the oil has been at the max design temp. and issues a warning message when the max oil temp period is reached. The system should be reset when the oil is changed. That's all.
Volvo give instructions to change the oil every 48k or 4 years if you use for towing or taxi work.
I change mine 3 years ago without any problems. (Amsoil) It did improve the gearchange.
I'd switch to a specialist garage that knows what it's talking about if I were you.
