My 1985 240 Station wagon rear hatch no longer supports itself in the upright position.

I have purchased two new strut supports for the rear door - but I have not been successful in removing the old ones.

In particular how to remove the strut from the lower end which is attached with a ball. I did remove the wire but I do not yet want to apply brute force to remove the ball joint as yet.

The strut screws in the lower ball joint but I am unable to unscrew the strut...

Can anyone share some experience on this ?
