Yes Dave, you are right - 2.5 was 4.1:1 whereas 3.0 was 3.73:1, regardless of gearbox.
The lower axle ratio on the 2.5 I guess this was a vain attempt to compensate for the smaller engine's lack of torque. I've owned all four combinations - 2.5 and 3.0, manual and auto. With the 2.5's I was always conscious of it being a smaller engine having to work a lot harder. The 3.0 is the engine this car should have - the extra 0.5 litre really does make a noticeable difference in driveability.
