Apologies if it doesnt make total sense but I'm not a petrol head and I'm trying to paraphrase what the head mech told me over the phone .
So the cylinder head and block (top and bottom respectively) would need to be parallel and when an engine is damaged and overheated the cylinder head bends like a banana and no longer seals. The head is ‘skimmed’ to take the banana like curve of it (this banana shape would be thinner than your fingernail so you won’t see it).

The head mechanic says that this repair has been done in the past and a new head os required.

Now that situation can arise. This would have to have happened if the previous owner over heated the engine, had the chylinder head skimmed and then you had the same problem, it’s true they couldn’t do that.

To measure a cylinder head for material is not something that can be done in a garage it is highly specialist (not hard or expensive but specialist).

If I have summed this up correct (it’s likly I have) then you need to state that the engine has only ever been worked on by Volvo and you expect a repair. I don’t believe they can tell you it’s already been skimmed and the chances of it been skimmed before are really quite low.

Even in this case it is not a new engine, it’s a new cylinder head.

Did they mention price to you?

Of course, it’s theoretically possible it’s over heated in the past, had a skim and has now overheated and can be repaired but it is a very suspect and highly unlikely story which is not possible to prove in a garage.

Also ask, what is the cylinder head thickness from factory, minimum thickness and measured thickness. I would bet a lot of money they can’t tell you as they won’t have measured it....
