I wondered what all the fuss was about with DPFs, especially when you consider that diesels of old didn't come equipped with them. Then I found out that modern diesels burn the fuel much more completely, emitting much smaller soot particulates which are much more easily absorbed through the lung linings & a real problem for those with aspiration issues. Hence the need for DPFs.
