Sweeping generalisation below:

What you spend on the car depends on the age and condition of it. All cars have parts that wear out at a certain time and will need replacing. Brakes, shocks, suspension bushes etc, all have a finite lifetime and need replacing at various times during a cars life. The more powerful a car and the harder you drive it the more quickly things wear out ..

Personal non Volvo example:
Last year my VW Bora had new discs/pads all round, shocks, suspension bushes, cambelt, clutch etc. so last year it had about £1k spent on it. This year however it will need none of those things doing, so should just be routine maintenance, and sub £200.
