Wow I don't know how to thank you! Brilliant information and fantastic you were able to successfully diagnose the problem based solely on my (probably iffy) description!

I've reattached the arm which itself seems in good shape, i.e, not broken or fractured, so hopefully this will keep me going for a while. I'll probably order one of those repair kits so I have the parts necessary when I need them.

I don't know how it came off, but thinking it through there are some bumpy tracks we regularly drive down as part of taking my sons to rugby so maybe this is behind it? Who knows.
