Sorry, just saw this.
Yes, they are supposed to have softer compound but it's the unique design that makes them so good in the rain (and feel like the car is glued to the road in both wet and dry).
I think the ones on the front have done 12K and there's lots of thread left. I'm not too concerned - they are decently priced so when I need to replace them - no big deal..
