After observing the recent replacement of my windscreen, I would say this rubber strip is there to stop a pool of water sitting above the glass, and possibly also to reduce wind noise. As already said, the waterproof seal is between the glass and metal edge of the roof.
What came off mine had a grove in the centre I thought that a second bit was missing but from what the kind people on here say it's just one piece. Sticky sealant it is then. When it stops raining!!!
