but if it wasnt, maybe you had better experience than I did, but very often "authorised dealership" mechanic being a 2nd year traineee has as much "experience" on working on T5 AWD as your local garage on Bugatti Chiron :P
to OP - would be good to get second opinion on that, have you tried another garage?
Vida+Dice will tell you 100% of codes, thats true, would be probably cheaper for you to get a set and it will return investment for you in no time, especially if you are good with DYI.
