In case this helps anyone else.

I done this tonight, had a MityVac gun ready but didn't need it. I filled the new filter up with diesel until it started coming out the outlet pipe, slow process but stuck with it.

Prceeded to fit the filter then and it started first time no problem, didn't need to disconnect any pipes to use the vacuum gun or crank over for bleeding etc....

@Cheshired5 - Cheers for the advice dude, I'm sure them tips will come in handy in future on some car no doubt.
