it can take around an hour - will continue if one journey is not long enough. Once it is installed you'll get a message saying something like "will complete when car restarted".
You can then check by going to check for software updates, navigate (!) to the map page, and select the region and it will give the latest map version (currently 1336)
I think if you download using the car SIM, you get a % complete reading, which is a bit more friendly.
