97 was the changeover year, so some are 4.3 some are 4.4. You can tell by checking the VIN. Link describing how to read it

Though given your problem and quoted error Im almost positive it will prove to be a 4.3 car. Reading errors codes from 4.3s is far from hard - here's a link on how to build a flash code reader for it:
