I would argue that a diesel performs far, far better than any petrol car.
It uses much less fuel.
It lasts a damn site longer.
They produce less CO2.
The bad micro particles in the earlier diesels are now much much lower and are considered cleaner mile on mile these days.
They can run on bio-fuels.
If you want "performance" as in speed the Volvo is a very poor choice! Get yourself an Atom.

Full tank though 70 litres, I get just under 800 miles on average.
