Default Does the ECT fail intermittently?

Last weekend the V70 (1999, 2.4 petrol manual) was reluctant to start and lumpy at idle. One one occasion the rad fan came straight on with ignition and remained on although cold, another it turned over but no signs of firing. After a few minutes it sprang to life and ran OK.

After a few days of non-use it is starting and running normally.
Vida shows ECM-2000. ECT signal too high, intermittent fault.

Thing is, the ECT now seems to be working fine. Shows the correct temp, climbs as the car warms up etc, voltage from the sensor in normal range.
I would have expected it to either work or not rather than have an occasional problem.
So is it a dodgy ECT and I just replace it, or is there something else going on like wiring or connector problems?

TIA
Joe
