I actually had a rethink afterwards Derek and I've drilled a slightly larger hole to accommodate a nice new rubber grommet and threaded the outer cable through it.

The reason I didn't route it through the existing lower grommet is that the higher mounting hole I drilled ensures that the cable is in a virtually horizontal straight line from bulkhead to new valve.
