There's a pattern there Mark - drivers side snow tray (plastic mat) and thick over-mats missing suggests they got seriously wet and were pulled out and dumped, or at least put somewhere to dry off and never returned to the car.
If it's a non-A/C car, it points to a dodgy heater valve, if it has A/C it could be anything letting water in and the car has just rotted.
Sounds like it's been used, abused and allowed to die.
